Prescribed minimum benefits (PMB)
Prescribed minimum benefits (PMB) is a list of medical conditions for which, in terms of the law governing medical aid schemes, medical aids are obliged to provide cover. The aim of the PMB requirement is to ensure a minimum level of cover for people experiencing certain chronic and life-threatening conditions. In order to access PMBs for psychotherapy, a psychologist, psychiatrist or medical doctor is required to submit an application to your medical aid scheme formally diagnosing you with one of the conditions that are covered. For an example of the kind of cover that PMBs provide have a look at Discovery Health’s list of PMB conditions for 2023.
